Maya Roth

Maya E Roth is an award-winning arts leader, teacher and theater artist whose work connects creativity, mentoring and cross-cultural ethics. She currently fills the Della Rosa Professorship at Georgetown University, where she served as founding Artistic Director of the Davis Performing Arts Center, inaugurating theme-based home seasons, multidimensional collaborations and student-centered research-to-performance-and curation models. As Program Director of the Theater & Performance Studies Program at Georgetown for over a decade, she stewarded the development of a trend-setting liberal arts major. Recent honors include the James S Ruby Faculty Award from Georgetown Alumni (2025). She has also won the College Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award, a Service to the Field Award from the Women and Theatre Program (of the Association for Theater in Higher Education), and an Eisner Prize from U.C Berkeley (where she received her Ph.D.) for artistic achievement. She loves cultivating cross-sectional learning communities, her sassy, creative son (born in South Korea) and the ocean. For nearly a decade she served as a Faculty-in-Residence with her family at Georgetown and from 2012-16 she served as chair of Georgetown’s Department of Performing Arts. Roth’s research expertise combines focus on classics re-visioned and cross-cultural plays by women playwrights; as artist and scholar, she is a leading expert on the work of Heather Raffo and Timberlake Wertenbaker. As longtime steward of the Jane Chambers Prize for feminist playwriting, Roth transformed the national adjudication process, reception, curation and public visibility of honorees. Roth’s disparate fluencies across arts, research and non-profit fields enable rare mentoring of programs, people and cross-cultural groups. She loves connecting with her family of adoption across life stages, cultures, interests and generations most of all.
