What organization do you volunteer with? Can you share a little about what the organization does?

I volunteer with ASIA Families, based in Washington, DC, metro area. In September 2009, ASIA Families was established by Grace Song to meet the needs of Korean adoptees and adoptive families. ASIA Families’ vision is to support Korean adoptees and their families, to build healthy self-esteem among adoptees, and to grow adoptee leaders through cultural resources.

What inspired you to begin volunteering with this organization?

I was lucky enough to join ASIA Families Korea Homeland tour for adult adoptees in June and July 2018. It inspired me to volunteer for ASIA Families’ Camp Rice, a three-day family sleepover camp in July at Pearlstone Retreat and Conference Center near Baltimore, MD. Camp Rice offers programs for children (ages 3-12), teenagers, and adults, as well as daycare for very young children.

What is your part/role in the organization? What do you actually do (so others get an idea of what they could do to help)?

I volunteer as a teen counselor, working and playing with teen Korean adoptees. Children participate in classes and activities with their peer group, supervised by adult adoptee counselors and Korean American young adults. Classes include arts and crafts, Korean music and dancing (both traditional and K-Pop), Korean history and culture, and cooking.

Do you have any additional comments or personal stories you’d like to share about your experience?

Being active in a local Asian adoptee non-profit (AAAW - Adult Asian Adoptees of Washington), and getting involved and active in the ASIA Families community has made me connect with more adoptees across the country and world. It is great to share experiences, learn, and create lifelong memories with one another.
