Cooking “hansik” (Korean cuisine) and experiencing Korean culture

ASIA Families began its spring session of Korean Culture School on February 8, 2020. More than 120 children, aged between 3 years old to 18 years old, from 41 families enrolled the spring session. Asia Families’ Board Chair, Joseph Brzostowski introduced and welcomed the new families registered for the spring session and thanked the volunteers. The President of the Washington Korean School Council (WAKS), Myung-hee Kim provided 100 paper “bokjumeoni” (Korean traditional purse representing good fortune) filled with “yakgwa” (Korean traditional deep fried snack) for adoptees, their families and volunteers.

On the first day of spring session, parents had a great time of making “saeng-seon-jeon” (Korean style seasoned fish battered and fried) and “chae-so-jeon” (Korean style seasoned vegetable battered and fried) with the Director Jae-ok Jang of Global Korean Food Research Institute. The Director Jang also showed the parents making Korean fusion style burger using “jeon” (battered and fried) method. 

In class, children learned about “seollal” (Korean Lunar New Year) and its tradition. They experienced the part of “seollal” tradition by eating “ddeokguk” (rice cake soup) together.

The youth class learned about “dong-ji” (Korean word for winter solstice) and “sambok” (three summer days in Korean lunar calendar) and tasted traditional Korean cuisine for each day: “potjuk” (red bean porridge) on “dong-ji” and “samgyetang” (ginseng chicken soup) on “sambok”.

The Korean Culture School, supported by the Ministry of Education of South Korea, is led by over 40 volunteers and Korean teachers. ASIA Families plans to hold 'Camp Rice’, a 3-day Korean culture camp, in Baltimore, Maryland on July 23, 2020.

한식 만들며 한국문화 체험

한인 입양아와 미국인 양부모들을 위한 사후 입양관리 서비스를 제공하는 아시아 패밀리스(ASIA Families, 대표 송화강)가 지난 8일 ‘코리언 컬처 스쿨’ 봄학기 수업을 시작했다.

이번 학기에는 3세 어린 입양아를 기르는 가정부터 18세 학생이 있는 가정 등 총 41가정에서 120여명이 등록했다.

수업장소인 락빌 소재 워싱턴 제일장로교회에서 열린 개강식에서 송화강 대표는 “새 봄과 함께 시작되는 컬처 스쿨에서 한국문화에 대해 많이 배우며 한국과 가까워지는 시간이 되길 바란다”고 말했다.

조셉 브조스토우스키 이사장은 새 가족들을 소개하고 환영한 후 자원봉사자들에게도 고마움을 전했다. 대보름날을 맞아 워싱턴 한국학교협의회(WAKS) 김명희 회장은 입양아와 가족, 봉사자들을 위해 약과를 넣은 종이 복주머니 100개를 후원했다.

수업 첫 날 양부모들은 장재옥 원장(세계한식요리연구원)과 함께 ‘생선전’ ‘채소전’을 만들고 이를 응용한 퓨전 햄버거를 만들며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다. 

어린이들은 설날의 전통을 배우고 설날 음식인 떡국을 만들어 먹으며 설날 전통을 배웠다.

청소년반은 한국의 절기 중 겨울의 동지와 한여름의 삼복에 대해 배운 후 그와 관련된 팥죽과 삼계탕을 만들어 시식했다.

교육부의 지원을 받아 운영되고 있는 코리언 컬처 스쿨은 40여명의 자원봉사자와 한인 교사들이 이끌고 있다.

한편 아시아 패밀리는 올 여름(6월 23일-7월 3일) 한국모국방문단 ‘코리아 브리지 투어’ 진행에 이어 7월 23일~ 25일에는 볼티모어에서 한국 문화 캠프인 ‘쌀 캠프’를 진행할 계획이다.
