ASIA Families sponsors a three-day family sleepover camp in July at Pearlstone Retreat and Conference Center near Baltimore, MD. Camp Rice offers programs for children (ages 3-12), teenagers, and adults, as well as daycare for very young children.

Parents say, “I don’t know how they do it, but Camp Rice gets better every year.” One of our youngest campers said, “I love Camp Rice. It’s better than Disney!”

Who Comes to Camp Rice?

Camp Rice welcomes all adoptive families with Korean children of all ages and their siblings. This includes:

  • Teens: In our separate Teen Camp, campers stay in cabins with adult adoptee counselors, with their own activities.

  • Siblings: We welcome birth children and children from countries other than Korea and tailor activities for them.

  • Young children (under 3): We offer daycare for our youngest campers.

Venue and Location

We are delighted to return once again to Pearlstone Conference and Retreat Center in Reisterstown, MD about 20 minutes from Baltimore. This beautiful facility includes a five-acre farm, hiking trails, and swimming pool access.

Accommodations for family campers are comfortable hotel-style rooms which include two double-sized beds in most rooms, with generous space for roll-away beds or cribs, private bathroom with a shower, linen service, air conditioning, and free wireless Internet service in the main building.

What Campers Do

Kid Campers

Days at Camp Rice are filled with classes and fun activities for children of all ages. Children participate in classes and activities with their peer group, supervised by adult adoptee counselors and Korean American young adults. Classes include arts and crafts, Korean music and dancing (both traditional and K-pop), Korean history and culture, and cooking. See the children's class schedule for 2019.

Teen Campers

Teen campers are students from rising 7th graders through 12th graders by fall of the year. Teen campers stay in cabins with adult adoptee counselors and participate in separate classes and activities. The Teen Camp experience also includes a separate campfire on Friday night and an offsite adventure, such as laser tag or paint ball. See the Teen Camp schedule for 2019.

What About Parents?

Camp is not just for kids! Parents attend classes, participate in small group discussions with other parents, meet one-on-one with adult adoptees, and even learn to dance and sing.

Parents join their children for meals, free time, evening performances, and all-camp presentations. There's also child-free time for walks along the trails, morning exercise class, or just relaxing in the rocking chairs and chatting with friends.

Parents’ sessions from Camp Rice have included:

  • Attachment Theory and Adoption, presented by Lori Thomas, an adoptive parent who is co-author of The Jonathan Letters and a professional counselor

  • Search, Reunion, and Outcomes, presented by Varda Makovsky, a post-adoption clinical specialist with The Barker Adoption Foundation

  • Research in Transracial Adoption, presented by Hollee McGinnis, a Korean adoptee and assistant professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work

  • Growing Up Adopted, presented by Hoon-Yung Hopgood, a Korean adoptee who was the first Korean elected to both the Michigan State House of Representatives and the Michigan State Senate

  • Healthy Racial Identity Development, presented by Karin Price, an adoptive parent, clinical social worker, and adoption therapist.
